Case Description
I HAVE A BROKEN TOOTH WITH A FILLING. NO PAIN .
CAN I GET A BONDING OR DO I HAVE TO DO A CAP?
MY LAST CAP WAS NOT A GREAT EXPERIENCE AND I WOULD PREFER TO MINIMAL DENTAL WORK. PRIMARILY I WOULD LIKE TO PREVENT DECAY OF THE EXISTING TOOTH.

Are You This Patient?
When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Short answer: It depends on the size of the broken piece of the tooth, and the size of the old filling. Long answer: Generally once an old filling is greater than 1/3 of the tooth width, the tooth is weaker and should be covered with an onlay or crown. Just bonding in a filling can work, but that new bonded filling can still break just like the tooth did before.

if there is enough tooth structure left an onlay can be done instead! We use porcelain to substitute for the missing tooth and filling.Dr.Glaser

Hi, Sorry to hear about your broken tooth, but glad to hear that you have no pain. As far as bonding versus a cap (crown), it depends upon how much of the tooth would need to be restored. If more than 50% of the tooth would need filling material, than a crown or porcelain onlay (partial crown) would be recommended. We often use the CEREC machine in our office to make all porcelain crowns or porcelain onlays in one visit -- no temporaries -- CAD/CAM technology. Onlays are more conservative of tooth structure than crowns and fit the tooth like a puzzle piece -- the way a filling often does -- but onlays are much stronger. You can see my website: www.terrrificsmilespb.com and click on the CEREC link to see more about the machine. If a tooth ideally needs a crown or onlay, we can often do a buildup (a large filling preliminary to a crown) until you are ready to do the crown/onlay. A buildup is made of a white resin filling material and can be contoured to the original shape of your tooth.... this often can give you time to get the crown or onlay in the future. We charge $199 for buildups generally. My primary office is in West Palm Beach just off of I95 but I do have a second office -- my new office -- in North Palm Beach that may be closer to you -- 721 US Hwy 1. You can call to schedule an appointment at either office: 561-433-9694. The consultation is free. If you have a current xray, please bring that, otherwise it is $17 to take an xray.Miriam Rubano
