Dry mouth wearing Invisalign braces

Dry mouth wearing Invisalign braces

Need Dentist / Specialist: No
Provide Cost Estimate: No
X-rays Available: No
Case Summary
Braces / Invisilign
Teeth:
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: 6 weeks
Last Cleaning: 6 weeks
Case Description
I am a 56 year old woman and have worn Invisalign braces for 6 weeks and experience what I consider, severe dry mouth. I have used toothpaste, mouthwash, and a gel for dry mouth and none seem to help. At times I have a claustrophobic feeling with these on my teeth.

I clean the appliances with ultrasonic and cleaner at every removal (worn 22 hours a day). I also brush my teeth after eating or drinking something other than water.

I am very concerned the dry mouth will cause bacteria and infection to teeth or gums. I still have 7 months that I will need to wear the Invisalign.

Are there any suggestions what I can do to prevent the dry mouth?

Thank you!

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

I have found that in most cases dry mouth is often medically induced. Certainly you concern is very valid as dry mouth can cause some serious problems if not treated as it often accelerates tooth decay and fungal growth. There are several questions that I have to ask you in order to determine you condition. Are you taking any new medications recently that may have decreased the flow of saliva? Have you had any radiation treatment for cancer in the head and neck region. If you answer yes to any of these questions, then it is very important of fully protect you teeth by using a high fluoride gel to brush with and to apply within your invisilign appliance. Most dry mouth conditions are treated palatively by drink frequent amounts of liquids (non sugar or acidic) and the topical use of dry mouth gels by biotene or oral-B. Dry mouth can sometimes be treated with the use of a drug called Salagen. Please consult your physician or dentist. I hope that this was helpful to you. Should you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

You can try biotene mouth rinse... also there is a great product called Theraspray which is a mouth spray specifically for dry mouth. Biotene is over the counter. Theraspray is available at dentist''''''''s offices --- I would be glad to send you one of these --- in my office they are $5 for each spray. Avoid mouthrinses with alcohol (listerine). As far as mouthrinses, I highly recommend the Oxyfresh line -- www.oxyfresh.com. They have a fluoride mouth rinse which is great for resisting decay. They also make a dental gel which will moisturize and sooth your gums. If you would like to try these products, I can have my office ship them to you (I''''''''''''''''m in West Palm Beach) -- just contact us at the office... you can also email us at terrificsmilespb@bellsouth.net. Be sure to floss at every removal. A power toothbrush is also great --- I like the rotadent and the sonicare. A lot of patients feel uncomfortable with invisalign similar to wearing partial dentures -- it''''''''''''''''s that foreign body sensation. The seven monthes will go by fast and the results are so nice with invisalign that it makes it all worth the trouble.
