Root Canal

Case Description
I had a root canal about a year ago on the uppper right last molar( next to wisdom, which was previously extrtacted). Subsequently it was sensitive to heat, not cold. I went back several times. He cleaned it again. Then he recommended an Apicoectomy Based upon my research of this procedure, I was hestitant to proceed. He wanted another $800 to do this in addition to the root canal payment. While the cost was an impediment, he also indicated that the procedure only had a 50% chance of success. I was also concerned about possible injjury to the sinus. I went back to see him last week. He said that he could not see any infection and perhaps the sensation was caused by a sinus problem. He said the root canal looked fine.

I am sitll having pain when drinking hot liquids. It is also sensitive when I touch the outside of the cap. The cap was put on prior to the root canal. It was restored with pulp and a post.

At his point, I can live with the problem, but am wondering if anyone has a suggestion.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Usually sensitivity to heat implies that there is some damaged nerve tissue somewhere. There may be a missed canal in that tooth, or it may be from an adjacent tooth. Sometimes the feelings can even be referred from the lower tooth underneath it. Even if the symptoms are not too bad at this point, a damaged nerve may develop a serious infection in the future. I would recommend you have it followed up. Feel free to call my office at (305)534-2525 to set up a consultation, or we can refer you to some independent Endodontists (root canal specialists).
